Gimme Shelter was founded in January of 2017. Our mission is to create awareness & funds for the first ever Hamden Animal Shelter.
In August of 2017, the Gimme Shelter organization became a division of Abandoned Animals, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.
You can sum up the reasons why this project has been stalled for 15 years by the fact that animals don’t vote.
Gimme Shelter chose a unique concept of being a catalyst in that they turn raised funds over to the Town of Hamden for the use of an Animal Control Facility. This not only inspired the creation of Hamden’s Animal Shelter Gift Fund, but town officials could now gauge the the broad support in the Hamden community for this project.
Hamden’s Animal Shelter Gift Fund is currently at $23,963.26. Our donations are mostly through 20% kickbacks at local restaurant nights. While this is not enough to build a facility, we believe by keeping this project in the public eye it helped a 2015 Capitol Gains Appropriation from being reappropriated.
